The SecEd Podcast: Diversity in School Leadership

This episode looks at leadership diversity in secondary schools, offering a practical discussion about what diverse leadership looks like, how we can develop a diverse leadership culture, and the benefits this can bring to your school.

We discuss how we “practise” diverse leadership – what should be in place to do it well and what are the crucial factors? How can we be vulnerable and admit mistakes – embracing the fear that this work can generate? What should we avoid when trying to achieve diverse leadership?

We tackle the implications for recruitment processes, again considering some dos and don’ts. How do we create an inclusive culture and avoid tokenism? How can we ensure school priorities are equitable and inclusive?

We also consider some useful further reading, networks, and resources for support.

This is the third podcast episode to tackle themes of diversity after two previous episodes addressed diversity and inclusion in the classroom (November 2021) and creating a culture of diversity across the school, including curriculum and workforce (May 2021).

This episode is hosted by Bukky Yusuf, a senior leader, science teacher and an educational coach who is also a member of the SecEd editorial board. Her guests are:

  • Audrey Pantelis is the founder and director of Elevation Coaching & Consulting. She is a former headteacher who has worked in special needs and mainstream for more than 30 years. She now works as a leadership coach and DEI trainer.
  • Zahara Chowdhury is head of whole school DEI, wellbeing and the PSHE curriculum at Beaconsfield High School in Buckinghamshire. Zahara advises and supports schools and teachers with their diversity, inclusion, and equality processes. She is also an education blogger and podcaster at www.schoolshouldbe.com
