This episode looks at coaching and mentoring as part of effective CPD practice and staff support in schools. Our experts explore different models, when to use coaching and when to use mentoring, how to measure impact, and practices to avoid.

Our experts define coaching and mentoring, how one differs from the other, and how coaching and mentoring practices in schools have changed over the years, including different models and how to measure impact.

We ask what the essentials are that need to be in place in order to make coaching and mentoring effective, including managing expectations, questioning skills, listening skills, switching between coaching and mentoring, and accountability.

We also discuss the challenges – what doesn't work well within the context of coaching and mentoring and why? What lessons have we learned?

This episode is hosted by Bukky Yusuf, a senior leader, science teacher and an educational coach who is also a member of the SecEd editorial board. Our guests are:

He is a postdoctoral researcher with Teesside University – researching the ways in which we can close attainment gaps and better 'poverty proof' classrooms. He is also a coach, supporting middle and senior leaders and early career teachers.
