Secondary teacher shortage set to continue, latest ITT figures reveal

A total of 25,300 applicants to teacher training from England were placed on courses in 2015/16, UCAS figures have revealed – an increase of 1,600 on the previous year.

However, concern remains over the shortage of teachers entering the profession.

At secondary level in England, the UCAS figures show that 14,090 students were placed on teacher training courses for 2015/16.

This is against a Department for Education (DfE) 2015/16 recruitment target of 18,541. The picture is better at primary, where 12,560 were placed against a DfE target of 11,245.

The UCAS figures cover placements on higher education-based, School Direct, School Direct salaried and SCITT (school-centred initial teacher training) programmes.

They show that among the secondary students in England, 7,670 were placed with higher education providers, 1,230 on SCITTs, 3,780 with School Direct and a further 1,400 are salaried on School Direct.
