Respect, trust and collaboration are at the heart of creating an environment in which everyone can learn, yet we often hear from students and staff stories of challenge or of the conflicts which start out small but have a larger more pervasive impact.
However, one of the most powerful tools in a teacher’s toolkit is the ability to break tension and resolve conflicts amicably and that starts with understanding the root of the conflict.
Recognising the precursors to conflict arising and knowing when and how to intervene, or even using conflict as a teaching moment, are all valuable skills. Along the way, some practical wisdom and a bit of humour can also help. After all, teaching is as much about interaction and social connection as it is about imparting knowledge or building skills.
