With exam season upon us, this SecEd webinar – now available to watch back – offered a range of practical tips, ideas and strategies to help school staff support students – both with last-minute revision and also with the anxiety that exams can often bring.

The hour-long debate, which features experts including wellbeing guru Dr Pooky Knightsmith, took place on April 25 and is now available to watch back.

We discuss how we can spot students who are struggling as their exams approach and what kind of “in the moment” interventions might help in the run-up to or indeed on exam day – including strategies to calm and support overwhelmed, anxious or stressed students.

We offer last-minute revision advice as well as tips on self-care in the run-up to exams, including “night-before” advice and things to do on the day.

As well as Dr Knightsmith, the webinar panel includes Gemma Williamson, deputy principal at The Hazeley Academy, Milton Keynes, Alex Smith, deputy headteacher at King’s School, Gloucester, and Sophia Kapcia, an English specialist and experienced teacher and subject lead.

The webinar was chaired by Pete Henshaw, the editor of SecEd, and the topics under discussion included:

  • With three weeks to go until exams begin, what does effective revision look like at this stage? How is last-minute revision best undertaken?
  • What kind of health advice can we offer students?
  • In the run-up to, on the eve of, and on the day of the exam, how can we advise students to best manage stress and anxiety?
  • How do students prepare properly the day before?
  • Techniques to use on the day to keep calm and perform well
  • How can teaching staff support in the days before the exam and on the day?
  • How can we calm students down if they are panicking? What can we do and say in moments of crisis?
  • What about after the exam – how can we calm students down if things did not go well?
