The Queen drops in to east London community school

Staff and students at Lister Community School in east London welcomed Her Majesty The Queen last week during an event that showcased the work of various educational charities.

The visit took place last Thursday (March 3) and was organised by The Queen’s Trust, which supports the work of various other charities within UK schools.

The Trust was founded in 1977 to mark the Queen’s Silver Jubilee and today it gives grants to youth charities focused on helping young people to develop and achieve.

During the visit, The Queen met representatives from each of the charities there and also watched performances by the students and some classroom demonstrations.

Lister Community School is a large comprehensive in Plaistow, one of the most ethnically diverse areas in London. More than 60 different home languages are spoken among the 1,350 students and around two-thirds are eligible for the Pupil Premium.

Among the charities showcased during the visit were graduate teacher recruitment organisation Teach First, Into University, which runs learning centres in low-income communities, and the Carers Trust, which supports young carers.

Also involved were City Year UK, which recruits young people aged 18 to 25 to give a year of service as mentors and volunteers in schools in low-income areas, and the well-known Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
