Students urged to drop ‘hackneyed’ openings to personal statements

“From a young age I have always been fascinated by…” is the most common opening line used by university applicants in their personal statement.

UCAS released a list last week of the 10 most common opening lines used in personal statements in its 2015 application cycle, with the line above featuring more than 1,700 times.

The exercise is intended to help students better convey their connection with their chosen subjects and to encourage greater originality. All of the top 10 most common lines could be said to be unoriginal.

“For a long as I can remember I have…” and “I am applying for this course because…” were the second and third most popular entries respectively.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – the famous quote by Nelson Mandela – was also chosen by nearly 150 students.

Mary Curnock Cook, UCAS chief executive, said: “The personal statement is supposed to be personal.

Learning to write about yourself in a compelling way is a vital skill when applying for jobs; using hackneyed phrases is not the best way to stand out.”

The most common opening lines were:

  1. From a young age I have (always) been (interested in/fascinated by)... (1,779 uses)
  2. For as long as I can remember I have... (1,451)
  3. I am applying for this course because... (1,370)
  4. I have always been interested in... (927)
  5. Throughout my life I have always enjoyed... (310)
  6. Reflecting on my educational experiences... (257)
