Partly funded pay rise leads to 6,500 funding plea

Ministers are being urged to commit additional funding to deliver on the 6,500 teacher recruitment pledge after it was revealed that the 4% September pay rise will not be fully funded.

The Department for Education confirmed last month that it would accept the School Teachers’ Review Body (STRB) recommendation for a 4% uplift to teachers’ pay from September 2025.

The DfE had been pushing for a 2.8% pay rise but this had led to the threat of industrial action from teaching unions.

The National Education Union said the DfE’s decision to back down was “testament to the strength of feeling in the profession”.

However, while the DfE is to provide £615m to help cover part of the pay award, it said that ”schools will be expected to find the first 1% of the pay award through improved productivity and smarter spending”.
