Guidance on 'actively promoting' British values published

Government policy
Government guidance has been published to help schools “actively promote” the “fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs”.

Previously, schools were required to “respect” these values, but changes earlier this year mean all schools must now have a clear strategy for embedding them and showing that their work has been effective.

Russell Hobby, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, advised: “The majority of schools will find they have been ‘actively promoting’ British values for years. School councils, PSHE, behaviour policies, a broad approach to religious education – all can and do exemplify British values. Before you do anything new, make sure you capture and describe the good work you are already doing.”

The guidance is online at http://bit.ly/1vzaZQy (maintained schools) and http://bit.ly/1yvAGDB (independent schools and academies).
