At a glance headlines: 23/6/2016

A data protection warning for schools, American university success for 66 UK students, and Thank a Teacher Day are among the SecEd At a glance headlines for June 23, 2016

Almost 1,000 schools were reported to the Information Commissioners Office between 2014 and 2016 because of issues with data protection. These referrals resulted in one criminal prosecution, with the data controller being required to act in 147 cases. A total of 145 schools were issued with compliance advice.

The figures come from Freedom of Information requests by the UK Safer Internet Centre. The problems are arising, it says, because schools are using more and more cloud services and pupils and staff are using a wider variety of devices. It means that “there becomes an increasing potential for data to be lost, destroyed or accessed outside of the school environment”.
