Workload: Give me just a little more time...

CPD is vital, but for too many teachers there is not enough time to focus on the professional learning they need, says Julian Stanley

“The more that you read, the more you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you will go.” Dr Seuss

For teachers, this quote represents the heart of their daily message to pupils – but what of a teacher’s own educational journey? Do they feel they are continuing to learn and go places too? Or are they stuck in limbo?

Unfortunately, it seems that for many the PGCE, school-based training and NQT years increasingly represent both the beginning and end of the formal professional development journey, a factor potentially contributing to the current exodus from teaching.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Just as in business, the role of CPD is critical if one is to gain new skills, hone existing ones and retain a passion for one’s chosen profession. CPD is in fact one of the most effective weapons in any sector’s arsenal for turning around the battle against attrition and positively influencing the sliding scale of employee satisfaction.
