The Who is Losing Learning Coalition has been set-up in a bid to place children’s ‘lost learning’ at the heart of the education debate in England. Headteacher Patrick Cozier explains

Recently, our senior leadership team faced a stark moral choice. A group of our year 10s were half-way through their BTEC in music when we discovered that the course would not count towards our school’s Progress 8 score.

No school leader needs reminding of the implications of a low Progress 8 – the risk of plummeting league table positions, intensified scrutiny from Ofsted and the Department for Education, and the potential perception that the school is in decline.

We thought hard about whether we should disrupt these students and switch them to a course that would “count”. We didn’t. We prioritised their best interests, took the hit, and kept them on the music BTEC.
