At the chalkface: Sadia

Sadia is more frightened than she used to be – by the increasing demonising of Islam, the incessant drizzle of Daily Express and Daily Mail headlines, which seem to be peddling something close to racial hatred

Sadia is 16. She’s in the 11th year top stream. She was born in London, Shepherds Bush. She speaks west London and is funny, stroppy, clever and giggles a lot. She looks sharp, has a nose piercing and likes Grime, Hip-Hop, Arabic folk and Prince – God rest his soul. She goes to the gym, dances salsa and has a wide mix of school friends. You could say Sadia is a typical London girl.

If anyone is typical London.

Sadia is also a Muslim.

If anyone is a typical Muslim.

This is the problem, this blanket generalisation, this labelling people as a group. She’s an individual not a tribe. It’s difficult enough negotiating school and home, being English and Muslim, being both and neither and being herself. It’s complex.
