Never do a photo-op in a school. Not if you’re a politician seeking votes. It is fraught with peril. You’ll end looking a prune – or worse.
There’s the famous photo of David Cameron attempting to fascinate six-year-old Lucy. His balloon face is oleaginous and desperate. Hers is hidden in head-banging boredom.
The photo is probably unfair, Lucy might be just shy. No matter. It is richly comic. Iconic even. A tableau of disconnection. He is frozen forever in an allegory: “Prime Minister and Child.”
Equally resonant is the portrait of Dave visiting a youth centre in 2007: “Prime Minister and Hoodie.” The youth waves an invisible gun behind the blithely innocent Dave, who is in caring, touchy-feely mode**. The ghost of Brexit vote hovers. Again, a fabulous disconnect.
