Africa: A public-private debate

Battle lines have been drawn in the public vs private debate for providing education in the developing world. Laura Brown offers an alternative public-private partnership model

In September, the UN member states met to agree 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Goal 4 relates to quality education. It is very ambitious.

While the predecessor Millennium Development Goal concentrated on expanding access to primary education, the SDG demands that all students are learning well across the whole lifecycle of education. The SDG calls for the global education community to do more and to do it better.

Meeting this formidable challenge will require additional resources. With traditional donors struggling to meet the 0.7 per cent overseas development aid target, it is unlikely that the necessary funding will come from aid alone. Cue calls for more private sector engagement.
