A resource offering pragmatic guidance about social media use for teenagers has been published.

The free leaflet has been created by mental health and wellbeing charity, the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust, and is entitled Social Media and Teenagers: A practical approach.

It looks behind the sometimes-alarming headlines to deliver useful guidance for young people, including suggestions on helping teenagers to make the most of the opportunities afforded by social media and steer a safe course through it.

It has been written by psychologist and author Dr John Coleman and covers themes including mental health and social media, the role of parents, supporting children of different ages, and how to adopt a “family digital strategy”.

It offers specific advice on challenging issues for parents including considering what is age-appropriate and the use of screens at night. The guide also offers 10 top tips for a digitally healthy household.
