UK-US university scheme successful for 38 students

Higher education
Thirty-eight UK students from low and middle-income families have won fully funded places at 28 leading American universities.

It comes after the 38 were among 175 students selected to take part in the Sutton Trust’s US Programme last summer, which offers the chance to attend a summer school at Yale, Harvard or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

And with a further admissions round taking place this month, it is hoped that we will see more students from the 175 winning funded places at American institutions.

The aim of the Sutton Trust programme is to encourage academically talented students from low and middle-income households to consider studying in the US.

The summer school involves spending a week living on campus and visiting a number of other US campuses. Students take part in residential activities and receive an intensive programme of support delivered by the not-for-profit US-UK Fulbright Commission over a number of months before and after their US visit, covering admission tests, college choices and the application process.
