Actor Sir Ian McKellen has spoken to students of his journey both personally and professionally to being openly gay.

His visit to Corelli College in south east London took place as part of his role as ambassador for Stonewall, the charity which defends the rights of gay, lesbian and bisexual people.

The Lord of the Rings star addressed a whole school assembly at Corelli (above), while also taking the time to chat to smaller groups of students (below).

Corelli College has been a Stonewall champion school for several years and has worked actively to challenge homophobia and to celebrate LGBT issues for over a decade.

Students were able to ask personal questions of Sir Ian, while many also asked about his recent film career.

Lucy Cuthbertson, Corelli’s Stonewall co-ordinator, said: “Sir Ian McKellen’s visit as an ambassador and co-founder of Stonewall felt like a wonderful reward for everything the college has achieved so far.”

Zara Tippey, Corelli’s principal, added: “Sir Ian’s visit is testament to the dedication of the Corelli College community to eradicate all forms of prejudice and highlights our commitment to LGBT issues. This was a most memorable event for students, staff and governors”.
