School to get a head of wellbeing as part of two-year pilot study

A pilot has been launched to explore the idea of introducing a “head of wellbeing” post into secondary schools.

It is being run by the not-for-profit healthcare body Nuffield Health alongside Wood Green School in Oxfordshire, which was selected for the programme after winning a national competition.

The initiative is to be funded by Nuffield and will see a two-year secondment of a head of wellbeing to develop and implement health and wellbeing strategies in the school.

The pilot will also focus on staff wellbeing, taking a holistic, whole-school approach.

It comes after research by Nuffield and the think-tank 2020health suggested that poor emotional wellbeing and high levels of obesity are two issues that could be improved with dedicated support in a school setting.
