Register now for our next two free SecEd Education Webinars

The SecEd Webinar will produce two episodes in the coming weeks – the first offering advice to help early career teachers thrive at the chalkface, the second focusing on how we can support secondary school students through key transition points (not least in year 7 in year 10).

Taking place on October 2 and 9 respectively, both webinars will run for one hour and will offer viewers the chance to hear advice from an expert panel and to ask their own questions.

Avoiding transition dips: Supporting students at key secondary school transition points

First up on Wednesday, October 2 (from 4pm to 5pm) we will tackle transition. This webinar will offer advice, ideas and strategies for how secondary schools can support students through two key transition points – as they enter secondary phase in year 7, and as they enter key stage 4 in year 10.

We will hear from three secondary schools about the work they do to support students during these two key transition points. This will include lessons learned, quick-wins, ideas and advice, as well as longer-term processes and practices that can set students up for success.

When it comes to year 7, we will discuss how schools can ensure students hit the ground running, including by using baseline assessments, effective induction practices, high quality pastoral support, and focusing on identifying barriers and ensuring academic progress.

When it comes to year 10, we will discuss common barriers when students step-up to key stage 4 study, how schools can overcome these, as well as wider best practice and tried and tested ideas for supporting students moving into key stage 4. We will also discuss the impact of Covid on those students who began their secondary education careers at the height of the pandemic.

An early career teacher survival guide

Next on Wednesday, October 9 (from 4pm to 5pm) we will offer vital support for early career teachers. The webinar will feature useful tips and advice from experienced teaching professionals to help new teachers thrive and survive at the chalkface.

The webinar complements SecEd’s annual ECT supplement, which published in June 2024 and similarly offers a range of practical guidance for new teachers. The webinar will feature a number of the experts who contributed to this supplement. You can download this 16-page supplement for free via: www.sec-ed.co.uk/content/downloads/supplement-a-survival-guide-for-early-career-teachers

In the webinar, we will discuss key topics for ECTs including handling workload, creating a workable work/life balance, avoiding burn-out, tackling ECTs’ common classroom “mistakes”, wider teaching tips, and advice for managing behaviour.

Ultimately, we will discuss ideas that can ensure ECTs begin creating healthy working habits now that will last you an entire career.
