Public Health England launches PSHE resources to support positive health and resilience lessons

A series of PSHE resources has been launched to support secondary schools in promoting “positive health, wellbeing and resilience” among young people aged 11 to 16.

The Rise Above for Schools series has been published by Public Health England and has been developed in collaboration with teachers and the PSHE Association.

Topics covered include bullying and cyber-bullying, alcohol, positive relationships, smoking, exam stress, online stress and body image in a digital world. More topics will be released later this academic year.

The resources include a specific focus on the challenges that young people face as part of the “always on” social media generation.

There are seven PSHE lesson plans, which have been piloted by teachers and include techniques to help “safely learn, explore and discuss coping strategies for dealing with issues”.

PSHE Association subject specialist Jenny Fox said: “The lesson plans provide opportunities for students to engage in active learning and to discuss and reflect upon the social and emotional aspects of issues they face on a daily basis. The lessons are consistently well matched to the needs of young people and enable them to demonstrate progress as their understanding and skills develop.”
