GCSE students will not need to memorise formulae and equations for maths, physics and combined science exams in the next three years, the education secretary has confirmed.

Bridget Phillipson has written to exams watchdog Ofqual to confirm that students will continue to be provided with formula and equation sheets for these exams.

They were first introduced in 2022 in response to the continuing impact of Covid lockdowns on students’ exam preparation.

In a letter to Sir Ian Bauckham, Ofqual’s interim chief regulator, Ms Phillipson confirmed: “Evidence shows that the pandemic continues to have an impact on students, who missed out on vital years of education and development, and stakeholders have raised concerns that removing the support which formulae and equation sheets have provided in recent years is premature.”

The education secretary also pointed to the government’s on-going Curriculum and Assessment Review, which is due to report next year when it will advise on long-term changes to curriculum and assessment.
