Children reveal their top 10 lockdown films

Playing outside, watching feel-good films, gaming and baking are among the top activities that have helped pupils to stay positive during the lockdown.

A survey of more than 1,000 children aged four to 13 found that 62 per cent watched happy, positive films to cheer themselves up.

Other morale-boosting activities included playing outside (64 per cent), watching clips on YouTube (58 per cent), gaming (54 per cent), baking (43 per cent) and doing arts and crafts (42 per cent).

Meanwhile, 34 per cent of the respondents said they have been using apps like FaceTime, HouseParty and Zoom to talk to their friends, rising to 44 per cent among the 12 and 13-year-olds in the study.

The survey also asked about children’s favourite feel-good lockdown films. Top of the list for children aged 4 to 11 was Trolls (U), an animated film following two trolls who go on a quest to save their village from destruction.

For the 12 and 13-year-olds, the favourite was Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, an update of the well-known 1995 film starring Robin Williams.

The research has been carried out by We Are Family and Panelbase and is published by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).
The top 10 films as named by the survey respondents (all ages) are

  • Trolls (U)
  • Frozen (PG)
  • Boss Baby (U)
  • The Greatest Showman (PG)
  • The Lego Movie (U)
  • Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (12)
  • Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (PG)
  • Inside Out (U)
  • Finding Nemo (U)
  • Spiderman: Into The Spider-verse (PG).

The BBFC has a dedicated children’s website, where families can find out about films and access free activities and resources based on the top 10 list, including Movie Night With the BBFC packs, case studies and a task where children are challenged to rate a trailer.
