Rise and rise of SEN: There are around 483,00 children and young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan in England’s schools and a further 1,284,000 on SEN Support. Ten years ago these figures were 237,000 and 992,000 respectively - Adobe Stock

There are almost 100,000 more pupils with registered SEN in England’s schools year-on-year after notable rises in both Education, Health and Care Plans and SEN Support.

Official figures for the 2024/25 school year (DfE, 2025) show that the number of children and young people with EHCPs has increased by more than 11% year-on-year, while numbers on SEN Support are up 3.7%.

It continues a trend that has seen a sharp increase in registered SEN since at least 2015/16.

It means that there are now 482,640 children and young people with an EHCP in England’s schools – up 48,286 year-on-year. And there are 1,284,284 on SEN Support – up 45,433.
