Teachers’ pay, yet another STRB leak, and industrial action...

Yet another year and yet another leak from the STRB over teachers’ pay. Following the NEU’s preliminary ballot on industrial action, Daniel Kebede says teachers stand ready to strike if they have to
Ready to strike? The results of the NEU preliminary ballot showed that 93.7% of members who responded rejected the proposed 2.8% pay rise, while 83.4% said they would be ‘willing to take strike action’ - Adobe Stock

We were hoping for something different, but the latest development in the School Teachers’ Review Body (STRB) is a sadly familiar one.

The Times recently revealed that this year’s teachers’ pay settlement would be something “close to 4%” – higher than the government’s proposal of an unfunded 2.8%.

Hard-working teachers are sick and tired of finding out their financial futures through leaks to the press. We don’t want hints and rumour, or percentages being bandied around in the court of public opinion like they are policies to be road-tested.

We need certainty and evidence-based decisions. If the STRB report is to be taken seriously as a considered part of the process, then it needs to be released in full, without delay, and without grand-standing.
