Queen's Speech fails to tackle major threats to schools

The Queen’s Speech offers nothing new for schools, which many will see as a good thing. However, Pete Henshaw is concerned that once again the government has failed to tackle the two biggest threats to education – funding and recruitment

School leaders and teachers may be shuddering at the thought of yet another Bill on education looming on the horizon after last week’s Queen’s Speech.

The vaguely titled “Education for All” Bill was detailed among 20 proposed pieces of new legislation, stretching from subjects such as tackling extremism to planning law.

The unimaginative and rather obvious title perhaps sums up the fact that there is little that is new within the outlined plans for the Bill – hastily thrown together to pad out the speech may be a fair conclusion.

The headline contents of Education for All include revised plans on forced academisation focused on “underperforming” and “unviable” local authorities. We already knew about this.
