Engaging girls in sports and PE: Lessons learned from the Your Time programme

The Your Time programme has proved effective at engaging girls in sports and PE in schools. Richard Norman considers four ‘lessons learned’ for schools from this work

Research conducted by This Girl Can and Studio You (2024) has shown that too many girls disengage from sports in their teenage years and are often left feeling that PE, sport, or being physically active is not for them.

Over the past three years, the Leadership Skills Foundation has worked with more than 300 secondary schools across England to find ways to address this issue via a girls-only sports leadership programme called Your Time.

In this article, I would like to focus on some of the “lessons learned” from this work when it comes to engaging and inspiring girls in their PE lessons.
