This episode looks at how senior and middle leaders can ensure that teacher appraisal and performance management processes are fair and effective, including what they should involve, how objectives should be set, and much more...

Our panel of experts discuss the purpose of appraisal and PM, what is in an effective performance management policy, and what kind of evidence should the process require.

We discuss how objectives should be set to enhance mastery and ensure teacher autonomy, what happens to those objectives once they are set, and how they should be monitored and measured.

We ask why we should avoid data-driven targets/objectives and how can we manage the process so that there are “no surprises”? And how do we ensure that lesson observations are supportive?

We also touch upon having challenging conversations, when and how these processes should link to pay and capability, and how we can ensure we protect teacher workload and wellbeing.

The podcast is hosted by Matt Bromley, an education advisor and author with more than 20 years’ experience in teaching including as a secondary headteacher and MAT director. Our guests are:
