School chef award

School food
Steven Cross has scooped the 2019 School Chef of the Year title after being given a wild card place at the award finals by judges.

Mr Cross is based at Park Community School in Hampshire, where he prepares 400 to 500 meals a day for 11 to 16-year-olds. He has been a school chef for five years.

He also consults at six local Hampshire schools helping them to move over to a fresh food service and to take their catering in house.

The finals of the awards, which are organised by the Lead Association for Catering in Education (LACA), took place in Stratford upon Avon. It saw 10 regional winners and two judge-selected wild card entries competing.

Against the clock and under the scrutiny of the judges, the chefs had a maximum of £1.30 to spend and 90 minutes to prepare, cook and serve an imaginative, school-compliant two-course menu.
