Wales’ new curriculum available by 2018 with first teaching in 2021

Wales’ first minister Carwyn Jones has said the “new momentum” in Welsh education must continue for the benefit of learners as the government prepares to roll-out a new curriculum.

Mr Jones said that much had changed since devolution in 1999 but he still believes there was more work to do, adding: “If you believe that education in Wales can and will be better, then we’re on your side.”

His comments came as education minister Huw Lewis announced that the new Wales’ curriculum would be available to schools by 2018 with formal teaching beginning by 2021.

In June, the education minister announced he was accepting all 68 of the recommendations in Successful Futures, Professor Graham Donaldson’s independent report on curriculum and assessment arrangements in Wales.

He also agreed to publish a plan setting out how the full benefits of Successful Futures would be achieved.
