Study identifies three priorities to bridge the gap between schools and employers

Business leaders have urged employers to work with schools to help youngsters make a successful transition from education to work.

A new UK-wide survey of more than 3,500 business and education leaders published by the British Chambers of Commerce also said that schools could do more to help students get on the career ladder.

The business leaders who took part in the research came up with three key actions needed to bridge the gap between school and work.

In their view, schools should embed key skills for work in the curriculum. The top five entry-level skills that firms value most are communication, literacy, numeracy, computer literacy and teamwork.

Second, firms would like schools to offer lessons focusing on recruitment and interview techniques. Most people in business think schools should teach students how to conduct themselves in interviews, demonstrate transferable skills and talk about the lessons they have learned from their work experience.
