Pupils feeling ‘constantly tired’ due to checking social media during the night

One in five young people regularly wake up in the night to send or check messages on social media.

Research published in the Journal of Youth Studies shows that girls are much more likely to access their social media accounts during the night than boys.

This night-time activity is making teenagers three times more likely to feel constantly tired at school than their peers who do not log on at night.

The study – entitled Sleepless in School? The social dimensions of young people’s bedtime rest and routines – has been undertaken by researchers from Cardiff University and involved more than 900 pupils, aged between 12 and 15.

It suggests that night-time activity on social media could also be affecting the happiness and wellbeing of young people.
