NUT-ATL merger decision due on March 22

Less than two weeks remain for teachers and support staff to cast their vote to decide whether a merger between the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) should go ahead.

The vote closes on March 21 with the unions’ members being asked to vote “yes” to the merger, which would signal the creation of the new National Education Union (NEU). The result is due to be announced on March 22.

The ATL’s members include teachers, headteachers, lecturers and support staff in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The NUT, meanwhile, represents teachers in England and Wales.

If both ATL and NUT members vote “yes”, the new union would launch in September with an estimated 450,000 members.

The proposal is for a transitional phase involving separate ATL and NUT sections, a joint executive committee and joint general secretaries. Then from January 2019, a new executive would take charge.
