International panel impressed with efforts to close gap

Narrowing the Gap
International educationalists who are scrutinising Scottish efforts to close the attainment gap have been “deeply impressed” with the first schools they have visited in Edinburgh and East Lothian.

The panel from the new International Council of Education Advisers includes members from the US, Canada, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Australia, Malaysia and the UK. It was formed after the Scottish Parliamentary election in May and will examine educational leadership and collaboration before the next meeting in February.

In a joint statement, council members said: “We have been deeply impressed with the schools we have visited during our two-day programme and we would like to thank all of the teachers, headteachers, pupils, parents and others who have taken the time to give us their perspective on Scotland’s education system. We have learned a great deal.
