‘I just feel everything has got too much. I have plans of how I am going to end my own life’

New ChildLine figures show increased suicidal feelings among teens, a spike in calls about abuse, and 85,000 contacts about mental health. Pete Henshaw reports

Almost 30,000 counselling sessions about abuse were carried out by ChildLine last year – more than one in 10 of all the contacts they received from young people.

The charity also made almost 2,000 referrals for children who were thinking about suicide, while more than 85,000 counselling sessions were related to mental health problems.

A total of 287,000 counselling sessions were carried out by ChildLine from April 2014 to March 2015, either online or via the telephone.

The majority of young people contacting ChildLine were aged 12 to 15 (57 per cent of those who disclosed their age), while 30 per cent were aged 16 to 18.
