Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow universities were among 11 of the country’s 18 higher education institutions to report a drop in the proportion of the least wealthy undergraduates below the age of 21 compared with 2014/15, according to data from the Scottish Funding Council (SFC).
Overall the percentage of students from the most disadvantaged families has fallen slightly to 10.4 per cent from 10.8 per cent, which Vonnie Sandlan, president of student organisation NUS Scotland, said was “incredibly disappointing”.
The official target – one in five students by 2030 – is double the current rate, although the SFC figures do not include students studying higher education at colleges or those aged over 21.
