A snapshot survey of 105 colleges across England revealed that 72 institutions referred students during the 2015/16 academic year.
Furthermore, 85 per cent of the colleges said they have seen an increase in students with disclosed mental health issues during the past three years; 81 per cent said they have significant numbers of students with undisclosed issues too.
Almost all the colleges in the survey said they were providing education on wellbeing as part of student support work. A majority also have dedicated counselling and welfare staff.
However, the survey – which has been undertaken by the Association of Colleges (AoC) – raises concerns about the impact that the severe funding pressures facing colleges will have on such services.
