Action plan on NEETs in Wales

Education chiefs in the Welsh capital say reducing the number of teenagers who swap the classroom for the dole queue is a top priority.

A new action plan called The Cardiff Commitment wants to further develop the city’s links with employers to establish Apprenticeships, work experience opportunities and partnerships with schools.

The most recent figures for Cardiff show that 563 16 to 18-year-olds were registered by Careers Wales as not in education, employment or training (NEET). This is down on the figures for the previous year but schools’ inspectorate Estyn wants further improvement.

Youth employment in Cardiff has actually increased in recent years, but 2,000 young people aged between 16 and 19 are unemployed.

Councillors believe schools hold the key to solving the problem of NEETs.

Cabinet member for education, Councillor Sarah Merry, said: “One of Estyn’s recommendations for the city council is to further reduce the number of young people not in education, employment and training.
