Best Practice Focus: How do students learn?

Teaching is the input and learning is the output. But what goes on in-between? In this 10-part series, Matt Bromley dissects the process of teaching and learning and asks what learning looks like – offering practical advice for school staff.

In a 10-part series for SecEd, Matt Bromley seeks to answer the question of “how students learn”, considering the practical implications for teachers and classroom practice.

He considers how both sensory and long-term memory works and the role of our working memory – and what all this means for classroom practice.

He focuses on how we can teach to give our students the best chance of retaining information and knowledge – especially on how we can build the skills of recall and memory in our students.

Much of the series is built around three key steps to help improve memory and recall:

  • Create a positive learning environment in order to stimulate sensory memory.
  • Make pupils think hard but efficiently in order to gain the attention of – but cheat – working memory.
  • Plan for deliberate practice in order to improve storage in, and retrieval from, long-term memory

Matt looks at each step in turn, offering practical advice and tips for classroom practice.
