Work experience pod offers students careers skills insights

A “work experience simulator” has been giving students from an east London school careers advice.

The futuristic pod was installed at Lister Community School as part of the LifeSkills programme. It aims to raise awareness of some of the skills that young people need to develop in order to succeed in their future careers.

It focuses on skills such as communication, problem-solving, networking, resilience and professionalism.

Once inside the pod, students selected the field of work they are interested in, before completing a series of interactive tasks. Feedback was given after each task emphasising why each skill is important. The tasks were timed, with the experience taking five to 10 minutes.

The LifeSkills programme, which is run by Barclays, was set-up to equip young people with workplace skills and in the coming months tools used as part of the LifeSkills Pod will be published as resources on the programme’s website, at www.barclayslifeskills.com
