Teacher’s letter sparks national debate in Wales

A desperate teacher, who is on the brink of quitting his job, has helped put concerns about workload at the top of the news agenda in Wales.

The unnamed teacher wrote a straight-talking letter to Assembly members, ahead of next week’s elections, summing up some of the most demoralising issues in the profession – workload, testing and pay.

He describes himself like many others in the job as “exhausted” and “demoralised” and in “desperate need of answers before I myself join the teaching scrap heap”.

The letter has been published in Wales’ national newspaper, The Western Mail and made the headlines as education has become one of the key issues during the Assembly election campaign. Votes will be cast on May 5.

The letter opens with criticism of Wales’ first minister Carwyn Jones for not trusting teachers after he stated that testing was here to stay.
