New data suggests thousands of young carers still remain hidden

The Young Carers in School support programme unearths an average of 15 previously unknown young carers in each participating school, sparking calls for better recognition of these vulnerable students. Pete Henshaw reports

Yet further evidence has emerged of the huge number of young carers whose caring roles are not known to their school and who are therefore not receiving the support they need.

Almost 500 young carers who were previously unknown to their schools were discovered during a project to offer young carers better recognition and support.

The 35 schools taking part in the Young Carers in School programme reported a dramatic impact on the attendance, achievement and confidence of pupils who care for a loved one.

The project was launched in April last year by the Carers Trust and the Children’s Society.

Research from the charities shows that young carers can miss or cut short 48 school days a year. Furthermore, there is often a reluctance among young carers to tell anyone about their responsibilities.
