Dorset school chef honoured for 10 years of excellence

A talented school catering manager who serves up to 1,400 meals a day has been named as a runner-up in this year’s BBC Food and Farming Awards, known as the “Oscars of the food world”.

Chris Watson, who has worked at Poole Grammar School in Dorset for 10 years, was one of three finalists in the Cook of the Year category, which honours “cooks who are imaginative and innovative at mealtimes in a hospital, care home, school or workplace”.

Poole Grammar School has 1,200 boys on its roll and is one of only five schools in the country to have achieved a Food for Life gold award. Mr Watson and his team of 10 staff (all part-time apart from him) prepare every school meal from scratch, using locally sourced, organic and sustainable produce. The school has its own vegetable garden, keeps bees for honey and frequently puts local fish on the menu.
