A year on from the Workload Challenge and nothing has changed. The ATL is now taking direct action in a bid to help teachers. Dr Mary Bousted explains

One year on from Nicky Morgan’s Workload Challenge we surveyed our teacher, senior leader and support staff members working in schools in England to find out whether they thought things had changed for the better. We wanted to know whether teacher workload was more manageable and their lives less stressful?

It is worrying that neither question was answered in the affirmative. Eighty-one per cent of teachers and 86 per cent of senior leaders said their workload was unmanageable.

Four out of five school staff reported that they had considered leaving teaching because of excessive workload and, despite the warm words from government ministers about reducing teachers’ working time, teachers hold the government responsible for much of their excessive work.
