In the run-up to Safer Internet Day on February 7, Martha Evans considers how schools can support pupils to use the power of digital images for good

As a student, once a year a photographer would come to school to take our photo. It was a day to ensure you looked your best because you knew the resulting prints would grace mantelpieces forever after.

For children today, every day is a photo day. Their phones, tablets, laptops and gaming consoles can capture images and videos and share them instantly. For many young people almost every significant moment in their lives will be documented visually. But what are the implications for children always under the lens? And what can we do to make sure children sidestep the pressure of being always on view?
