Ending the stigma: Early help is the key to tackling mental health issues

More teachers are reaching out for wellbeing support, but only once they have already reached crisis point. Julian Stanley says the stigma over asking for help must end

Our confidential telephone helpline has been extremely busy this last year. We have seen the number of teachers calling our counsellors, who provide emotional support to education staff, rise by 35 per cent in the past 12 months. The majority are calling in crisis.

Despite this bleak picture, it may surprise you to learn that next year I want the number of callers to rise again – because we fear that the high number of callers doesn’t tell the whole story.

This is because the majority of those accessing our support are doing so at a late stage – once they have reached a crisis point. This can and should be avoided. And that’s why I’d like more people to call us. We want to offer help before teachers and education staff get to that stage.
