Diary of an NQT: Handling the mocks

NQTs
As term two gets fully underway, our NQT diarist is handling the fall-out from the mock exams – both positive and negative…

We have been back for around a week now and already the routines are back in place and everything feels like it is settling down again. I have started back with the same rules and routines that I had last term and I feel like my students are now used to the expectations that I set out every lesson.

Starting back after the first term has been very different to my first week back in September. Three months ago, I felt like I was fighting for students to understand that I was their new teacher.

This was really hard, especially with the year 11s, who were halfway through their GCSEs and felt somewhat abandoned by the teacher that had taught them for the previous academic year. Now it feels like the students know that I am their teacher and it is a really nice feeling to have.
