Diary of a headteacher: The impact of Progress 8

As we approach the business end of the school year, our headteacher diarist is starting to see the real impact of Progress 8 on his approach to student support

When I first started as a headteacher I felt that I had a reasonable understanding of the work I would be required to carry out, along with the character and personal traits I would need to exhibit in order to be successful.

That first year of headship was a significant learning curve for me and I learnt many things that will remain with me for the rest of my career. Expecting the unexpected was unquestionably an element of headship that I developed a greater appreciation for as I progressed throughout the year and the ability to deal with the plethora of curve balls that are thrown at you in a calm and decisive manner is definitely a prerequisite of an effective head.
