Diary of a headteacher: Getting good governors

The voluntary nature of governance makes it difficult to recruit people with the skills and dedication required. Our headteacher diarist reflects on how the role has changed

During my first 18 months of headship I have learnt a great deal. I’ve developed a much greater understanding of school finances and I’ve definitely had my suspicions about school improvement confirmed; by that I mean I now know for sure that the only way of really improving outcomes for young people is to focus on the things that matter – learning and teaching.

However, there are many distractions that often get in the way of our core business as school leaders and it can be easy to get side-tracked. There are also many other aspects of school leadership that I wasn’t particularly exposed to until I became a headteacher.
