Academies: When is a u-turn not a u-turn?

The national media and many others celebrated the government's "u-turn" over complete academy conversion this week – but what did the DfE actually announce? SecEd editor Pete Henshaw believes it is anything but a u-turn...

When is a u-turn not a u-turn? Education secretary Nicky Morgan’s reversal on her plans to force every school to become an academy was widely labelled as a "u-turn" or a "climbdown" in most national media headlines and commentary this week.

I for one despise the term "u-turn". I find it bizarre that critics of government policy spend weeks, sometimes months, lambasting a particular policy, only to then lambast the very same politicians with equal vigour when they seemingly listen. Really, we should welcome and encourage ministers when they listen to constructive criticism and pull back on plans. It doesn’t happen nearly as often as it should – as readers will know very well.
